That whole bronzed goddess look has been popular for years now – and I can see why – but this summer, it’s back and better than ever. Generally even the most natural beachy, sunkissed beauty regimen requires a heavy dose of shimmer (not to mention all the waterproof product and setting spray). But this year it’s all about that natural glow: dewy and glossy, like you were just splashing around in the waves. We all know that’s not how swimming usually goes (hello, eyeliner streaks) but it turns out there are a few much simpler ways you can achieve the same idea.
Halo Highlight – It’s no surprise that highlighter should be your #1 makeup staple if you’re looking for a summer glow. Rather than appearing bronzed or piling on makeup that may or may not melt off in the heat, highlighter adds a subtle sunkissed shimmer. The Smashbox Halo Highlighting Wand is on the market once again (major win for the strobing-obsessed), and its creamy, non sparkly formula adds dimension and shine, without the overdone look.
Ice Your Face – Yep. I’ll talk more on the concept behind cold therapy later, but this quick trick for getting a flushed look works just like stepping outside on a cold morning does. Basically, you just grab an ice cube, wrap it in cloth so it’s not too harsh and glide across your skin post-cleanse, but before you apply any makeup. Pores are less prominent, makeup looks more fresh – all after a couple icy cold minutes. It goes without saying that it’s beyond refreshing on a scorching hot day, too.
Facial Mist – The less dramatic form of the above would be making sure to always keep a good facial mist on hand (you can see my top picks here). Face mists cool you down on hot days, sure, but they’ll also give you a more youthful dewy look and revive parched skin. If you’re worried about makeup sliding off, most of them (Jurlique for example) are formulated to set your makeup too, giving it a refresh. This is especially important if you tend to dry out.
Face Gloss – Yet another simple product to achieve a sunny, glowing visage is Milk Face Gloss, a clear liquid that can go over makeup or straight on your bare face to achieve a natural sheen. Kind of like applying a dab of lip gloss to the areas you want to highlight, minus the stickiness. With this, you literally are highlighting specific features, rather than applying color to them. This product is for those of you who generally go no-makeup during summer but like the idea of having a dewier look.
